One of the best parts about going out for trick or treat is not always the candy. For some people, especially adults, seeing the scary Halloween decorations about the neighborhood is just as much fun if not more so then a bag full of candy. Some families like to drive around just to see what people have come up with each year. If you want to do your own home with some scary decorations either inside or out, there are a few standard things that your decorations should include whether you buy them or if you decide to build or make them on your own.
Use of light is always important in scary Halloween decorations. This means more of a lack of light than anything else. Things should be dark, but lit enough so that they can be see or so that no one will get hurt. If you have a dark space through which people should walk, you can use a ghostly dim light or you can use something like a strobe light, which can play tricks with the eyes and the brain. This adds to the scary factor of almost anything that you can put together. You can use these inside and out for whatever you want to do.
You also have to have some fog if you really want to make an impression with your scary Halloween decorations. This is easy enough to do. You can find fog machines at a great price online and you can find the right type of fluid that goes into the machine at the same time. This can be overwhelming to people, so use sparingly inside of any home. You can overdo it outside too, so be creative when thinking about when and how much of this to use. Add lighting to your fog for a very spooky effect.
Cemeteries are often great ideas for scary Halloween decorations. This is something almost anyone can do in their yard, even if they have a small yard. You can buy or make your own tombstones and you can even add a casket if you wish. In fact, a casket that looks like it is open a bit and come up out of the ground can be really scary. Don’t forget to use the above light and fog ideas to make your lawn cemetery especially scary for anyone who walks by.
The element of surprise is also a good element to include when you want to scare people. This means you can find or make scary Halloween decorations that are going to pop open, make a sudden noise, or otherwise do something that is totally unexpected. Being scared is something some people look forward to on Halloween, so be sure not to disappoint. If you feel that you have done is too scary for kids, make a sign saying so. You may want to keep the really scary in your backyard and put up a sign for adults only. Kids love to get scared too, but we all know that sometimes too much does more damage than you can imagine.
